The other morning I woke up early enough to explore interesting subjects to paint. I walked around Lauderdale by the Sea with my sketchbook and camera. There was quite a bit of activity in the seaside village. From scuba divers and snorkelers to the morning walkers everyone seemed to be enjoying the bright morning. Then I spotted the morning cactus spotlight.

There was a narrow walkway with the sunlight streaming towards me. A planter with a cactus was outside a green door and it seemed to have a spotlight directly on it. Immediately I had to paint it. After sketching the scene and taking some photos I headed home.

The first thing I did was create a value sketch with markers. Using 3 grey markers I did the drawing below in my 5.5 x 8.5 sketchbook. This gave me a nice guideline that I used during the painting process.

Painting alla prima or in one sitting I finished the original oil on canvas shown below. I started this oil with a bright yellow and pink underpainting. I left those pops of bright color throughout the painting.
