Just posted a 10 minute watercolor tutorial video on my youtube channel. Longest video that I have posted yet. This video demonstrates how to paint a palm tree with the beach in the background.
How to Paint Tips
It’s a start to finish watercolor demo with many painting tips that I have used over the years.
- color mixing
- brush selection
- wet into wet painting
- wet into dry painting
- scraping
Just some of the painting techniques that I show in this video.
Check out How to Paint a Palm Tree, and I will be happy to answer any painting questions you may have.
Finished painting shown below.
Dear P J Cook,
I should like to thank you for posting your instructional video on “How to paint a Palm Tree”. Never mind you work in Watercolor while I use Acrylics, your method works in both mediums. Considering the amount of time and effort I’ve
expended in trying to find a satisfactory method in which to depict Palms in their natural beauty without dwelling on botanical
detail and “en plein air” so to speak, I came upon your “Painterly” style with much relief! Fortunately I have a set of excellent
“Brights” with which to follow your example which I am really looking forward to pursuing. Living in the North I have to rely on
photos from past tropical trips, or calendar pictures to depict my favorite subject “tropical beaches”. But I shall now add you to my favorite painters’ list which includes the likes of Emile Gruppe and contemporary. Mike Rooney. Please keep showing your lovely work! – Gordon Stirling
Dear P J Cook,
Thank you for displaying your skill in depicting the beauty of Palm Trees as we savor and remember them on tropical beaches, without necessarily dwelling on their botanical detail. Living far away in the North, I have to rely on the photos I took on those trips to Florida, Hawaii and the Caribbean for my subject material, so its good to find a guide as to how to depict the “essence” of these wonderful subjects.
Sincerely – Gordon
